What I Eat When I Listen

99 days food journal

In this world, we often feel trapped in our own fortresses and fastnesses. However, certain foods, dishes, and songs connect us with specific memories. These connections are profoundly personal and always present, yet they bring a sudden sense of freshness and newness that keeps us grounded.

It all began when I heard the song "Man Like You" by Tom Misch during lunchtime. The music reminded me of a story about a boy who embarked on a spontaneous 20-hour hike with insufficient food and water. Despite the challenges, he managed to complete the journey alive. While eating the colorful roasted veggies on my plate, I couldn't help but imagine how the aesthetics of the food (see the image below) would compare to the stunning views on that hike. Seeing such vibrant scenery would motivate me to push through obstacles if I were ever in a similar situation.

Just like that, I came up with the idea of keeping a food journal for 99 days. I wanted to see what it would be like to record my everyday meal on the "green plate" and play with the food and a song I vibe with. It is like carrying "an emotional package - daily," so I brought the "green plate" to Hawaii, Vancouver, ski resorts, and Asia.

Being consistent is the most challenging part of this project, but I am glad I figured out how to keep it going with new perspectives. Like life, whether easy or complex, we figure it out as we go. It is a satisfying experience to connect two of my most genuine interests, food and music, while wrapping up this project with Tom Misch's latest song, "Insecure," felt absolutely magical.

"For Alex, you are the reason I've become the better version of myself <3"
